Landscape aesthetics as a new direction of applied ecological researches

The aesthetics of a landscape is becoming increasingly apparent direction of ecological researches in connection with the importance of aesthetic evaluations and perception of the beauty of the natural environment in contemporary society. "Landscape model" of environmental aesthetics, first grounded in the Canon of the "picturesque" of the eighteenth century received further development on the base of new concepts of perception and so called В«visual ecologyВ». In the last decade we received a fundamentally new way to study the aesthetic properties of landscapes that are associated with the methods of geoinformation modeling and mapping. In turn, accumulating В«big dataВ» necessitates rethinking the theory, and, above all, to overcome the reductionism caused by attempts to "objectify" the subject of the study. В«The returnВ» of the man in to landscape and the restoration of the В«subject-objectВ» dispositions reveals the hierarchy and the structure of visual space by mapping with localization the observer's position and showing the limits of visibility. The analysis of landscape scenes using photography and GIS models has allowed discovering the relativity of the visual function of individual landscape elements. It should be noted that practical application of landscape aesthetics receives wider application. Aesthetic properties and features are used in the programs for the inventory and mapping traditional cultural landscapes of high historic value in many countries. An important application of landscape aesthetics methods associated with the visual landscape assessment procedure which can be used in Russia as a special part of the standard procedure of EIA. Aesthetic landscapes can serve as important aspect for the development of management plans for national parks and museum-reserves under the open sky.
