The article deals with cultural and historical potential of a region (on the example of Mangistau region) for the development of educational tourism. The region is not a random choice. The main motive for the choice of the abject of study was a large number of historical monuments on the territory which are poorly presented in the tourist market of the republic. Combination of recreation with life knowledge, history and culture of other nations is one of the tasks that educational tourism is capable to solve. Knowledge of culture and customs of another country enriches the spiritual world of a person. It is know that level of cultural development can be used to create a favorable image of a particular region in the tourist market. Elements and factors of culture can act as channels of information distribution on various tourism opportunities. The success of tourism depends not only on material and technical basis, but also on the uniqueness of the cultural national heritage. Objects of cultural national heritage must be presented rationally and creatively. Due to the scientific and technical progress production of one country does not differ from similar products of other countries. Uniformity in culture is unacceptable. Region that wants to become a popular tourist destination should have unique cultural complexes and offer them for the tourist market. It was found that about 50 % of the unique historical and cultural monuments of Kazakhstan are concentrated in Mangistau. For a dozen years numerous architectural and historical monuments, stone statues of man and animals, original findings in the excavations of Kyzyl-Kala and Sherkala fortresses, cultural and ethnic heritage of the people who inhabited the territory of the region in different historical periods attract historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, leading research centers in the world to a place where the Great Silk Road passed.
